How to self-tan your face for a perfect result

5 Jul, 2022

Whilst we’re obviously a fan of the head-to-toe glow, sometimes you just want to add a bit of warmth to your face. Plus tan on your face fades faster than on your body so you may want to keep it topped up every few days. Follow James’ expert tips on how to tan your face easily and with flawless results.

Can you use self-tan on your face?

From moisturising daily to avoiding hot bathing, here are our top tips for making your self-tan last:

It is safe to use face self-tan products on the face. However you should always make sure that you don’t have any wounds before applying self-tan on the skin. People with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis should avoid self-tanners during flare ups.

If you have acne, make sure to use self-tan products with skincare included, that is ingredients like aloe vera, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid, which are all included in our face tan products.

Self-tanning your face step by step

Prep

Use your favourite moisturiser on any drier patches of skin and apply some along the hairline to act as a barrier cream.

Choose your tan

There are lots of different types of face tanners and the one you use comes down to personal preference on the consistency you like to use, how quickly you want to glow and the type of glow you’re after.

For a gradual glow choose…

H20 Tan Drops and Click & Glow Face – these are great options if you haven’t tanned before or you want to slowly build up a colour. Add 1-4 drops of these to your usual serum or moisturiser to transform it into a gradual tanner that will give your face a light, subtle glow.

For a glow on the go choose…

Coconut Water Tan Mist – is a great option for topping up your tan when you’re out and about or pushed for time, as you simply mist this down your face and let it settle. No buffing or anything else required. If a rose scent is more your thing, try Rose Glow Water Mist.

For getting a glow overnight choose…

Sleep Mask – a super hydrating night mask that has been designed to plump your skin and tan your face while you catch up on your beauty sleep. The Sleep Mask Tan Go Darker is for those who want a more intense result.

For getting a glow quickly choose…

Glow 20 Serum – this develops in just 20 minutes and is packed with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. Think of it like your regular face serum, with glow-giving benefits.

Remember SPF

By following the steps above you’ve now got your natural looking sun-kissed glow sorted. It’s essential to apply SPF on top of your self-tanning product to protect your skin to keep it glowing for even longer.

Boosting your facial tan

Self-tanners fade faster on the face than on the body. If you notice that the shade of the tan on your face is lighter than on the rest of your body, you can add tan drops to your usual moisturiser.

Keep your face tan from fading

Maintaining a gorgeous, glowing tan is not an easy task. Since your face is less covered than the rest of your body you may find that self-tanning on your face fades faster.

How long does a tan last and how can you make your face tan last longer? Here is some expert advice:
● Hydrate and Moisturise
● Exfoliate
● Avoid hot water
● Apply a face tanning serum
● Use a gradual tan like Click & Glow for Face

Remove your face tan

To remove your self-tanner from your face, you can either use a scrub or an exfoliator with AHAs or BHAs that will speed up skin cell turnover. You can also try adding a few drops from our self-tanner eraser to your favourite exfoliator.
